Evan M. Dudik & Associates has found that often the best way to launch a successful consulting project is by implementing a three-step process:

Step 1 We initially diagnose our client's problems and opportunities at low or no cost or risk to our client, which is beneficial to both parties. This may range from an initial set of conversations and interviews to a short diagnostic project. Next, we collaboratively discuss how we can be of most help.
Step 2 Working closely with our client, we develop a project plan including activities, deliverables, timing and fee arrangements. To ensure client needs are met, we often suggest a steering committee of key client executives to oversee our work.
Step 3 Working with client staff members, we conduct the key analyses and interviews required for sound decisions. We meet frequently with our client's steering committee to make any mid-course corrections. Client team members are usually intimately involved as our recommendations take shape so implementation is often underway, with management approval, even as our final reports and presentations are prepared. We fully document our findings, analyses, and recommendations.
Our fee arrangements are flexible and recognize our client's needs for speed and cost-effectiveness. Rather than an hourly or daily fee structure, we have found that a set project fee range with a firm upper boundary is often most comfortable for both parties. It encourages maximum communications between our client and us. Sometimes there is a success-based component to our project fees, including equity options.
